The School of Life: Embracing Mistakes as Sacred Lessons

We often strive for perfection, fearing mistakes as signs of weakness or failure. But what if life were less about getting everything right, and more about exploring who we are, who we are not and who we wish to become? What if life were about expanding our awareness, tapping into our unlimited potential and choosing our creations? What if every misstep was actually a sacred invitation to align more with what we truly wish to create?  What if what we perceive as mistakes in truth offer valuable information about ourselves and what we wish to create, or not create?

In this blog, Hana explores the idea that we are all eternal students, here to learn, unlearn and learn again:

Learn about life and ourselves

Unlearn what is not serving us anymore

Learn again but also and mainly:

Create what is more in line with our authentic self.

  1. Life as a School:

Most of us believe that reality is no more than what we see with our own eyes and hear with our own ears. We have also unconsciously internalized our parents’ or educators´ beliefs as absolute truth and fail to realize that our parents and educators had also unconsciously inherited the set of beliefs of their own parents and ancestors and passed them down to us.

Additionally, we often overlook the fact that everything we see or hear is filtered through our own set of beliefs.

Theses realizations lead us to the conclusion that what we perceive as our own observation of the world and understanding of reality is, in many ways, merely a reflection of the long-standing beliefs of our society and ancestors. We also come to realize that if we internalize the inherited teachings without ever questioning and challenging them, we would most probably be unknowingly suppressing a vital part of ourselves.

However, if you are someone in tune with your inner self, you will intuitively sense and know that there is much more to reality than this transmission of fixed beliefs and that it is up to you to unwind these beliefs and create your own ones!

You will eventually come to realize that much of what you were taught, whether by your parents or the education system, was quite incomplete:

  • your parents faithfully transmitted to you their own set of beliefs based on their own inherited or created fears, traumas and limited awareness
  • the traditional education systems, considering the rational mind as the master of life and failing to see the hidden mechanisms of creation, insisted so much on developing your analytical mind and skills, offering little – if any- recognition to intuition, creativity, not to mention spirituality.

This is how, when we progress in life, we start having the feeling and confirmation that we were fed with lies and fears and that a significant part of ourselves has been overlooked and left un nourished by traditional education!

Our soul, intuition and deeper knowing have often been simply ignored -if not outright dismissed- by our primary educators and conventional schooling and we were not taught the most important things about us and life: who we are in truth and how we are the generators of our own experience.

However, a day shall come when you would maybe feel the inner call for more genuine knowledge, where you may feel a flame burning within you, urging you to break from societal mould and go after the truth!

This is when you start questioning everything you were taught and begin to question the true nature of a Human and pretty much everything about Reality. This is when your quest for truth takes a conscious turn.

This is when you enter life-conscious school, and this is when you also realize that whatever you inherited – the lies or lack of true knowledge, the fears and the traumas – you had agreed on receiving them as part of your learning process!

  1. Life is a Unique School:

This school, unless the traditional one has no end.

As long as we are willing to learn, evolve, and explore the depths of our being, our learning shall never end.

How can it possibly end? Our consciousness strives to unite with the Divine, a journey that never ceases to evolve. Even if our consciousness could reach the Divine, by the time it would meet it, the Divine would have outgrown it in his/her infinite and never-ending expansion.

This school evolves with us. It adapts both to our predispositions and conscious intentions.

We are all born with specific predispositions and skills. This school is designed to reveal and perfect our skills. It also teaches us the necessity to share them with the world, for the more we practice them and share them, the more they will gain in power.

Finally, the teaching program at this school expands with our willingness to learn and expand our knowledge.

On our learning path, we will be uncovering, discovering and unravelling mystery after mystery that others before us might have discovered, but we will also have the possibility to create our own curriculum by our unique way of apprehending reality with our unique soul attributes.

Knowing all of this transforms this school into a very exciting one! You will definitely have challenges on your path. However, the more you learn what the rules are, the easier and more joyful learning will become.

This is the school of Life, and this is the real school.

  1. The Gift of Mistakes/ What mistakes truly are:

So why would you embark on such a journey of self-discovery, you might ask? Why not simply enjoy life without excessive questioning and hassle? Well, you don’t have to.

However, we are by nature curious beings eager to explore all possible choices and paths, and the pull toward greater knowledge and deeper understanding of the self and life is a natural tendency we all have. While some feel this hunger for knowledge from early childhood, others may not experience it until adulthood. Many will develop it during pivotal moments in life, perhaps triggered by a challenging event or inspired by someone who sparks their curiosity and ignites that inner flame.

And so, we embark on this journey of self-discovery, we consciously enrol in the school of life.

In the school of life, no one tells you what to do or not to do. It´s like a game that has its rules, but chances are you were not taught these rules and will have to figure them out for yourself!

While navigating this school, until we grasp its fundamental rules, we will likely commit many ‘mistakes’, mainly for not fully understanding our co-creative abilities.

What are these rules?

First, the rule of not harming. Chances are, we have broken it time and time again. How many times have we hurt others or ourselves, knowingly or unknowingly?

Then, the rule of projecting our intent. How frequently do we recognize that, in every moment, we are projecting our intentions and beliefs into the world?

And the rule of harvesting what we sow. How often are we truly aware that what we reap is the mere fruit of our sowing –  the outcome of our thoughts, intentions, and actions?

What we call mistakes are, in truth, solely our lack of understanding of these rules, receiving from Life what we believed we had neither asked for nor wished for.

But in truth Life was simply responding to how we played the game

  1. Reframing Failure:

While many teachers in traditional schools tend to punish their students for not learning their lessons well enough, more and more teachers are focusing on the importance of learning, including from mistakes.

These teachers focus on accompanying the students towards a better method of learning for they understand that failing is not a choice but rather an indication of a lack of understanding of the rules or the lesson. It simply signals that the lesson hasn’t been integrated yet. These teachers understand that you cannot force an understanding, and therefore, no one should be punished for not understanding, despite their intention to learn!

Similarly, in the school of life, when we ´fail´ or make ¨mistakes¨, what´s the point in judging ourselves so harshly? Why don´t we instead reflect on the reasons behind the apparent failure? Why do we fail to recognize that ´´mistakes´´ are simple indicators of what we are yet to learn – whether about the rules or the truth about the great game of Life?

Mistakes are not, in truth, errors and don’t indicate that something is wrong. They simply signal that we have created something we hadn´t wished for or intended to.

Mistakes are actually an inherent part of our soul’s experiential nature and help us refine what we wish to create more of.

The more we embrace this truth, the more peace and ease we find on the path.

Let us shift away from self-judgment, harsh punishment and self-flagellation, and move towards self-inquiry!

  1. Forgiveness as a Learning Tool:

In this school of life, learning with joy, compassion, and forgiveness is a must.

How can one truly align with truth if truth is delivered in a harsh, tyrannical and forceful way?

No true learning can happen when it is forced upon someone or when the person is unwilling or not ready for it.

The truth of the Universe reveals itself to anyone who genuinely seeks to listen, and when it does, it is always delivered in a free, forgiving and compassionate way.

Whenever you find yourself astray – choosing a path that is not aligned with your intent – acknowledge it, be compassionate to yourself as you would to a toddler, smile generously and guide yourself back onto the path.

No forcing, no punishment, no anger, no resentment. Only a smile, inviting yourself, the child within you, to realign again to the path.

Forgiving yourself and others is an act of emotional intelligence and spiritual maturity.

  1. How to Listen to the Lesson:

Each aha moment is a lesson in disguise.

Each victory over pain, sorrow, frustration, and anger is the blossom of a lesson.

Learn more from these lessons by reflecting on your past actions, especially the thoughts you had when entering a state of anger or frustration. What was I thinking at that moment? What beliefs shaped my reaction? Am I sure these beliefs were true, or were they influenced by my own perception of the situation? Could I have chosen another thought concerning this situation? Could I have chosen a less vengeful or angry thought? And if I had, would the outcome have been different?

If I can imagine having a different thought or reaction, did I truly give myself the needed space and time to fully tune in and feel this situation? So fully and deeply that this situation blurred in my mind and transformed into peace? If not, invite yourself to do so.

Invite yourself to revisit every similar situation and fully tune into the emotions – anger, regret, and beyond. By fully tuning into them, these experiences transform into lighter ones, leaving their imprint as deeply integrated lessons within you.

Simple practices to help reflect, integrate, and grow from your experiences.

  1. Your Soul is Always Learning:

Learning doesn’t end. Life doesn’t end. Awareness has no closure, no end.

We are forever learning, expanding and choosing.

Life is magical and bountiful with experiences.

The school of Life is the most beautiful school.

The degrees are automatically granted to you once the lesson is integrated.

There is no written test, but only a conscious realisation signalling to you and Life that you have well integrated the lesson!

The more lessons you learn, the more will come your way.

The beauty of it is that the more you learn, the easier learning becomes and the more enjoyable it gets!!
